Behavioral Strategies

Keeping it Real and Simple

  • Use simple language to gain a child's attention.
  • To gain compliance, simply state what you want them to do, not what you don't want to do
  • To help with transitions and to establish routines, create a visual schedule.  For young children, use pictures.
  • If your child has difficulty communicating, use simple pictures to give them information and let them draw to communicate.
  • If your child is upset, simply reflect this back to them.  It is comforting for feelings to be acknowledged.
  • When your child is overwhelmed, simply Ask your child...How can I help?  What would help you?
  • When your child is overwhelmed, reduce demands, verbal and sensory input.
